Therese Gough

Therese Gough who studied MSc Environmental Health (Online).

Overall this course has worked really well for me, as it meant I could continue working and study as a distant learner at the same time.

What did you think of the course?

Overall this course has worked really well for me, as it meant that I could continue working and study as a distance learner at the same time. During the course I also did a two day a week work placement that lasted for two years. It proved to be a great insight for me into the varied work involved in environmental health.

What modules did you find interesting?

The module that I enjoyed the most and found the most interesting was Health and Safety: The Home Environment. The module leader, Alan Whitfield, was always very helpful and encouraging. I got an A overall for this module. I feel that having a background in housing meant that I could relate to the subject matter better.

What skills have you developed?

I have certainly developed organisational skills. I have become better at using Microsoft packages such as Word and PowerPoint. I had to do a presentation about health and well-being. This was challenging for me as it meant having to create a presentation and present it to my peers, but it was a very good way to take me out of my comfort zone and learn a few new skills along the way.

How have you found studying online?

Studying online means that I could study when it suited me. It worked around my schedule. The discussion board was a great tool to talk to other students and see different points of view.

How have you found the lecturers?

I have always found the lecturers to be helpful and encouraging and they generally understood and listened to my concerns.

What would you say to someone coming to Derby?

Give yourself time to prepare and finish your essays and assignments. Try to make new friends as they are a great source of support, and also help you through university life. Most importantly enjoy your time at university, it'll all be over before you know it.

What are you doing now?

Having just graduated, I am now working towards obtaining registration with the environmental health officers' registration board (EHORB). I am doing the professional exam very soon. I was recently awarded Graduate Membership ofthe Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. I can't wait to move into a position in environmental health as soon as I have completed the professional exam.
