Terri Weston, MSc Environmental Health Graduate

Since graduating, my employer has taken advantage of the knowledge and experience I obtained from studying at Derby and moved me in to a new role in the Private Sector Housing Team

What were the main reasons you took that course?

Having worked as a Pollution Control Officer in an Environmental Health Department at a Local Authority for a few years, I developed an interest in other aspects of Environmental Health including public health, housing and food safety. I decided to spread my wings and embark on a career as an Environmental Health Practitioner, so I chose to study the MSc in Environmental Health at Derby to kick off my qualifications.

Why did you choose to study the course at Derby?

The course is organised in such a way that makes it well suited to working full or part time alongside studying. I chose to attend lectures at the university one day per week to take advantage of meeting other people in the same situation as me and to utilise the University's facilities as well as using the online applications such as the electronic library and journal databases.

How did you find the lecturers and the support they have given you?

The lecturers were very supportive and always on hand to give advice, either at the lectures or over the telephone or email. Their feedback on assignments was always constructive and I believe my writing skills have really developed because of this. The course materials were all placed on the UDo system which was great for referring to.

How has your study linked in with your work/job?

I have developed a much better understanding about why our environments are so fundamental to health and well-being, and as a result I have been able to apply this to my decision making at work. Since graduating, my employer has taken advantage of the knowledge and experience I obtained from studying at Derby and moved me in to a new role in the Private Sector Housing Team. I am really pleased about this as I am learning and facing new challenges every day. I am currently working towards the professional exams and interview so that I can register with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board.

What would you say to anyone thinking for coming to study this course at Derby?

If you're planning to study and work at the same time you should be organised and plan ahead to ensure that you can balance your time. Be prepared to work hard!
