"The course I took at Derby has given me great flexibility as a geologist. The benefit of having a solid, well-rounded, geology degree, with a particularly strong field work component, has been immeasurable".
Dr Simon Baker
Currently: Working for the BG-Group, UK North Sea.
"I specialised as a deep-water sedimentologist. I then had to re-broaden during mt current career as a Petroleum Geologist working for BG. I fell back upon the skills and knowledge I gained at Derby to deal with clastic and carbonate reservoirs in a variety of basins and structural settings."
Graduated: 2000, BSc (Hons) Geology, First Class; MSc Petroleum Geoscience, University of Aberdeen; PhD, University College Dublin.
Dr Michelle Boast
Currently: Working for Image Interpretation Technologies, based in Calgary, Canada, a service company for the petroleum industry. I interpret HRAM data, Bouguer anomaly data, remote sensing data, and regional geology, in conjunction with proprietary seismic interpretations and well data, to produce structural maps of sedimentary basins around the world.
"The course I took at Derby has given me great flexibility as a geologist. The benefit of having a solid, well-rounded, geology degree, with a particularly strong field work component, has been immeasurable. I took the hard rock route at Derby but given my current career path, part of me wishes that I could return to Derby and take the soft rock courses!"
Graduated: 1998, BSc (Hons) Geology, 2:1; PhD, University of New Brunswick, Canada.
Dr Ian Kane
Currently: Research sedimentologist with Statoil, Norway.
"I came to Derby age 23 after spending a few years involved with outdoor activity work. I chose a geology degree purely for the fieldwork component. At Derby emphasis is placed on gaining understanding through first hand experience and that meant lots of fieldwork and practical exercises which I enjoyed. I found that upon completion of my degree I had several job opportunities but chose to continue my education. My time at Derby was thoroughly enjoyable, the department is friendly and there is always support and advice from the lecturers when you need it. If you like a challenge and don't mind the occasional rainy day in the field then geology at Derby is definitely worth considering."
Graduated: BSc (Hons) Geology, First Class; PhD, University of Leeds, Post Doctoral Research Fellow in Sedimentology, University of Leeds.
Currently: Drilling Fluids Engineer working offshore in the petroleum industry with Baker Hughes
"Not only was the Geology course at Derby great for making long term friends, but it has enabled me to follow my choice of career and earn a decent living from it. When I first started at Derby, I wasn't sure I'd made the right choice. Now I have no regrets at all."
Graduated: 2000, BSc (Hons) Geology, 2:2.
Ben James Martin
Currently: Working as a Consultant Wellsite Geologist through my own limited company. I'm currently assigned to BP Exploration working on a long term development project on the Magnus Field. As a wellsite geologist I act as the link between the office based Geology Department and the offshore drilling team. I am responsible for rock sample descriptions, identifying formation tops and strategic boundaries, hydrocarbon evaluation, formation pressure evaluation, casing and core point selection and the supervision and training of all contractors and staff related to geological operations.
"As a wellsite geologist, I am responsible for rock sample descriptions, identifying formation tops and strategic boundaries, hydrocarbon evaluation, formation pressure evaluation, casing and core point selection and the supervision of all contractors and staff related to geological operations. There are also endless reports and logs to compile too. With the added responsibility comes a fantastic potential for earning great money. The starting rate I am on will earn around £60 ‑ £70,000 a year."
"Not many universities can claim to have as many field trips as Derby. This was an excellent way to find out what the rocks actually look like in the field and was especially beneficial to my career as a rock sample covered in oil and mud will look very different to the nice, clean lab specimen you'll see at most universities. Also the diversity of the subjects available at Derby University will suit any future candidate who has an idea of what career they want and needs to customise their degree for that."
Graduated: 2001, BSc (Hons) Geology, Third Class.
Currently: Logging Geologist with Geoservices Ltd.
"I graduated from Derby after an amazing three years and now work in the offshore industry as a mudlogger, which I couldn't have achieved without the great support and guidance of my lectures. Going to Derby was one of the best moves I've made so far!"
Graduated: 2008, BSc (Hons) Geology, 2:1
Currently: Petrophysicist with TGS-NOPEC
"My three years at Derby were very enjoyable. To do well isn't easy, but the staff are excellent and very helpful, approachable and supportive. With their help and advice, there is no reason why anyone with the right application can't be successful. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the course was the various field trips, in particular Tenerife. Travel, education and beer, not many courses offer that."
Graduated: 2003, BSc (Hons) Geology (2:1)
Currently: Working as an independent consultant to the hydrocarbon industry based in the Channel Islands
"I found the degree programme to be excellent and extremely flexible so that I could tailor my degree to both my interests and career aspirations. The three years were great although I still can’t see limestone and think of anything but the three weeks in the rain in a Derbyshire dale being terrorised by sheep as part of my dissertation! Since leaving I've mainly been employed in the oil industry but on occasion I've dabbled with geotechnics (including supervising landfill creation). My work in the oil industry has concentrated on various hydrocarbon provinces around the world but mainly the North Sea and North West Shelf of Australia. The latter work finds me visiting Perth often but I've also spent time in Houston. I've moved away from Geology a little now and concentrate more on Geophysics."
Graduated: 2001, BSc (Hons) Geology, First Class
