British Geological Survey (BGS) - Geology Graduates - University of Derby

British Geological Survey (BGS)

"My time spent at Derby allowed me to realise my potential and this was very much down to the staff and the excellent course structure".

Alan Weller

Currently: Geologist/Geophysicist with the British Geological Survey.

"I have been and will continue to work on a number of very diverse projects in UK, Mozambique (Direccão Nacional de Geologia), Spain and recently for past seven months in Papua New Guinea on an EC project mapping the Highlands of PNG".

"Highlight of my career thus far, real adventure and geology the old fashioned way: map, rucksack, porters hacking out paths through jungles, wading through rivers, and mapping where no man has mapped before."

Graduated: 1997, BSc (Hons) Geology, 2:2.

Richard Shaw

Currently: Working as a geochemist, British Geological Survey (BGS), Keyworth, Nottinghamshire.

"It would be fair to say that I was a late developer academically! However my time spent at Derby allowed me to realise my potential and this was very much down to the staff and the excellent course structure. I now spend my days analysing pore-water samples from around the world, which is a far cry from anything I studied at Derby. However, it has been the transferable skills I learnt whilst there that have stood me in good stead career wise."

Graduated: 2002, BSc (Hons) Geology, (2:1)
