George McGavin finds new species
Professor George McGavin, our visiting Professor in Entomology has been in the media spotlight recently. He lead the scientific team on an exciting expedition to remote areas of New Guinea and helped to discover an amazing range of new species, including a new species of giant rat. The expedition was filmed by the BBC and was aired recently as "lost land of the Volcano", which has attracted large viewing figures and critical acclaim. For more information, see the BBC website.
Success for Biological Sciences in RAE 2008
We had a very successful submission to the Biological Sciences Unit into the UK Government's Research Assessment Exercise 2008.
The results showed that, although The Biological Sciences Research Group is relatively small, our research work is of significant quality. It should also be noted that Derby was the only post 1992 University in this region which made a successful submission Biological Sciences Unit of Assessment.
