Science and Instrumentation of Bone Densitometry - Level 7 (LBR)

When can you start this module? |

Learning Beyond Registration

Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is a vital part of developing competent, capable health service practitioners prepared to deliver a dynamic, flexible, quality, client-focused service. If you're employed by the NHS in the East Midlands then you may be eligible for fee-free access to our LBR modules and/or programmes. You'll need to supply evidence of approval from your line manager and Trust Education Lead when you apply.

About this module

The development of X-ray equipment able to image and quantify the measurement and assessment of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) has evolved rapidly. This is due to the recognition of osteoporosis as a major bony disease and the requirement to establish high levels of precision and accuracy in the measurement process.

The diversity of imaging equipment for BMD assessment is extensive. There currently exists little education and training in the scientific principles regarding the operation of such equipment and evaluation of bone densitometers systems when establishing an osteoporosis service.  urrently, quality assurance and testing of such equipment is varied and practitioners have little understanding as to the operation and efficient usage of hardware and software systems in the positioning and analysis of their patients.

The aim of this module is to  provide you with an appreciation of the scientific principles of bone densitometers in order to inform your clinical activity and allow you to critically evaluate overall system performance.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the scientific principles and characteristics of bone using ultrasound and ionising radiation.
  2. Understand the operating principles of bone densitometry systems and compare and contrast overall system performance.
  3. Critically review bone densitometry systems as part of the installation and provision of an osteoporosis unit within a primary/secondary care unit.
  4. Analyse factors affecting the overall measuring process critically reviewing different measures of bone mineral density.
