Developing women farmers' markets in Africa

Helping to encourage sustainability and independence

Dr Dina Abbott has been working with women farmers' markets abroad for 12 years, to help encourage sustainability and independence.

Goods such as onions, potatoes and tomatoes have to get to market quickly otherwise the produce rots and can't be sold, and the cycle of poverty continues.

Introducing new communication systems

Ugandan authorities running a women farmers’ network in Kampala recently introduced a computer system where women can communicate with each other and market organisers to understand changing market conditions, road delays and other issues which might affect their ability to get goods to market and make money.

Discussing her project with the Vice-President of the Gambia

Dina and some students were granted an audience with the Vice-President of the Gambia, Her Excellency Aisatu N'Jie-Saidy

They talked about their work involved in the Banjundling Women's Vegetable Garden and other women's subsistence farming projects.

Dr Abbott has also offered Gambians marketing and crop diversification advice with Mr Adama Bah, a leading campaigner against poverty.
