Built Environment Research Group
The Built Environment Research Group was launched in 2010 to fill a gap in the research profile of both the faculty of Arts, Design and Technology and the University. Working as a multidisciplinary group BERG focuses on a number of areas in architecture and civil engineering. Researchers within the group are active within research networks both nationally and internationally including the East Midlands Research Network in Philosophy and History of Architecture and Design, and collaborative research in Theory and Context in Architecture and Designing Environments with Dr. Antonio Caperna, Uniroma3, Rome Italy and Prof. Nikos Salingaros, University of Texas.
The architectural members of the group have acknowledged expertise in the following areas:
- Urban planning
- Architectural design of interiors
- Sustainable environments and communities
- Innovations in design and technology along with cutting-edge technology in the uses of software
- Health and safety
- Building biology
- Exploration of old and new theories and context in architecture
- Interdisciplinary and cross-boundary connections with arts and design;
Civil engineering focuses on a number of key areas including:
- Tactical and incremental Capacity improvement through Smart Passenger Focused rail data
- Infrastructure railway asset management and optimization
- Heavy maintenance techniques
- Wheel rail interface
- Life extension of railway track
- Specialist construction procedures and innovations in construction management
- Innovations in surveying methods and site preparation.
