About the course

The Diploma in Quarry Technology aims to help those already employed in the minerals extractive industry or those with an interest in it, to gain a nationally recognised academic qualification.

Such a qualification will help those destined for managerial responsibility and who wish to acquire professional status.

While the course is extremely rewarding, it must be appreciated that this form of study demands a considerable commitment in terms of time and effort outside working hours. It's therefore important that you're self motivated and prepared to devote at least 12 hours per week to study, for the duration of the course.

Your career

The quarrying industry is vital to the UK economy as it's worth over £4 billion each year and employs some 40,000 people in a variety of roles. Jobs exist at many quarries across the country, as well as marine wharves, concrete plants and aggregate recycling operations.

While the Diploma in Quarry Technology is aimed at providing potential quarry managers with the knowledge that they will need to progress their careers in this industry, the qualification also helps those destined for a career in the various specialist fields, such as: health, safety and environment manager, blasting and minerals planning.

How you'll learn

You'll study by distance learning, supported by four or five weekend tutorials each year, held in Derby at the Enterprise Centre. Course materials are in an interactive electronic format and are fully supported by electronic access to the library and other learning resources.

Instruction as to how to use these resources will be provided online and at the introductory tutorials.

How you're assessed

You'll be assessed through a mixture of coursework and exam. Your final grade will be made up of 30% coursework and 70% exams.

Fieldtrips

Each year a five-day study tour is organised to a number of quarries, manufacturers and suppliers to the quarrying industry in the UK.

The course fee includes the provision of the key text and catering at weekend tutorial sessions. It does not include accommodation for weekend tutorials, the study tour or fees for sitting exams overseas
