Learning Beyond Registration

Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is a vital part of developing competent, capable health service practitioners prepared to deliver a dynamic, flexible, quality, client-focused service. If you're employed by the NHS in the East Midlands then you may be eligible for fee-free access to our LBR modules and/or programmes. You'll need to supply evidence of approval from your line manager and Trust Education Lead when you apply.

About this module

Public health is everybody's business and this module is for nurses and other health care professionals who wish to study public health with a focus on the social determinants of health and vulnerable populations.

The focus of the module content will be on the affect of the social determinants of health on populations with emphasis on those from disadvantaged backgrounds or people who are vulnerable.

The module will commence with an overview of the recent (1800-present) history of public health in the UK with particular reference to specialist nursing practice and current public health debate. Definitions and meanings of Health, Need, Public Health, Vulnerability and Health Promotion will be presented and analysed.

The essential principles and elements of public health will considered. Medical, socio-economic and biophsycosocial determinants of health and their effects on communities and vulnerable people will be discussed.

The inequalities agenda and approaches to tackle inequalities in relation to past and present policy will be considered.
In an introduction to demography and epidemiology, public health information and its sources and uses will be considered in addition to an introduction to the uses of epidemiology and frequency measures of health outcomes in demography and epidemiology. In considering approaches to health needs assessment and community profiling strengths and limitations will be discussed and data collection to assess community health need.

Health improvement interventions for communities and those with vulnerability will be considered.
