About the course

The work based learning industry employs over 30,000 staff in England (Lifelong Learning UK, 2010). Job roles can be varied and include personnel and training department staff, assessors, tutors, trainers and internal verifiers, to name a few.

LLUK estimate that the demand for work based trainers and educators will continue to increase, and yet there is no single qualification that brings together the range of skills that these professionals need. Significantly, many occupationally and technically competent staff are also being asked to support learning in the workplace, as tutors or trainers, and as mentors to apprentices, but not all are being supported in developing their personal skills to allow them to do this effectively.

This programme brings together a range of subjects that have been identified as key areas of learning for those who support learning in the workplace. It aims to provide a holistic approach to the professionalisation of this field, as well as enabling those with skills in some areas (eg. tutors or assessors), to expand their skills and knowledge in other areas.

The programme aims to:

  • Bring together a wide range of intellectual and practical perspectives and resources to illuminate understanding of work based learning and the contexts in which it takes place.
  • Enable the design, development and delivery of learning which is based on activities carried out at work, recognising and overcoming some of the problems associated with practical work based learning solutions.
  • Support the practical application of learning within current work contexts, providing real-time learning and immediate business impact.
  • Ensure that work based learning is understood in the wider context of organisational and sector specific issues.

It's a work based programme which means that learners study part time and apply everything they learn to current organisational issues through practical activities and assignments. This brings real value to both individuals and organisations.

How you'll learn

This programme is delivered mainly through an online virtual learning environment (VLE), so access to a computer and the internet is essential.

Support is provided on a continuous basis by personal tutors, and face-to-face sessions will also be held as appropriate.

There is a pre-enrolment process which will support each individual with the choice of learning pathway through the qualification. Once enrolled on the programme, each module is followed in turn with worked submitted for informal review and feedback, and then for final assessment. There are a range of different activities, tasks and learning interventions associated with each module to enable exploration of the topic and application within a work based context.
