About the course
In mental health settings, building a good therapeutic relationship is the greatest challenge that you'll face. During this introductory course you'll focus on the therapeutic relationship and have an opportunity to develop your psychodynamic skills. Developing these skills will allow you to use your emotional, physical and intellectual reactions in the clinical situation to encourage intimacy and insight in your patients.
This course provides a friendly and trusting learning environment where you can share your own clinical knowledge and learn from one another's experiences. That's why we have a limit of 12 students on the course.
Your teaching will be focused on the basic, though not simple, elements of psychodynamic work, with most of your learning taking place through experiential exercises and group discussions. The exercises will initially be based on material provided by the course leaders, but it will quickly start to focus on your current clinical encounters making it very relevant to you. You'll be allocated time to complete reflective diaries, which will help your learning and will form the basis of your final written assignment.
This course lasts ten weeks and runs on Wednesday afternoons at the Derby Psychotherapy department in Temple House. To successfully complete the course you must pass a written assignment to demonstrate that the principles you've been taught have had a positive impact on your clinical practice.
