The Vakalo School of Art and Design was established in 1957 by a team of artists, designers and theorists, headed by George Vakalo.

The School was founded with the aim of offering courses in what was then called 'the applied arts', a field which was not covered by Greek education at the time. The College was unique and held in high esteem. Today the College's design programmes are on an internationally acknowledged level of Higher Education, and enjoy a highly respected reputation as a recognised leader in its field in Greece.

The design programmes were developed by the Vakalo School of Art and Design, a private Design college, and submitted for external validation by UoD. Although there are no corresponding home programmes, staff in the School of Art and Design worked closely with Vakalo in terms of providing advice and guidance during the development phase, and this close working relationship has continued with regular visits and monitoring by UoD staff.

The undergraduate programmes were validated as non-honours awards in October 1996 and developed to honours programmes with effect from 1998. Following the success of the undergraduate programmes, the master's programmes in Visual Communication and Interactive Media and Interior Architectural Design were developed and approved for delivery in 2000 and 2001 respectively. The undergraduate programmes are delivered in full-time mode and attract students aged 18 years of age who have completed their secondary education. The postgraduate programmes are also delivered in a full-time mode and are designed for students who have normally obtained a good first degree in Design. All programmes are delivered and assessed in Greek.

The following programmes are currently running at Vakalo:

  • BA (Hons) in Design (Graphic Design, Interior Design pathways)
  • MA Visual Communication (Graphic Design, Illustration and Book Design, Typography, Web Design pathways)
  • MA Architectural Design (Interior Design, Landscape Design, Spatial Design, Theatre Design pathways)
