“If you're not looking for the big city life, Buxton's perfect really.
”
Dave is one our FdA Outdoor Activities students in his first year.
» What have you enjoyed most about the course?
I enjoy the practical side the most, which we have one day a week. It's really good to get outdoors and gain the practical experience. I really enjoy it!
The course is good because after the two years on the FdA you can then stay on to do your full degree in your third year.
» What do you think of the facilities and equipment?
I think they're really good. When we have our practicals all the equipment is provided. If you wanted to go out and buy your own the lecturers recommend which equipment is the best, which I think is really beneficial.
» How have you found the lecturers and the support they have given you?
They all manage to reply to your emails, and you can go to their office. You can book appointments with them to go through things like how to write an essay, and they recommend books to read which help with your work.
They all come from an outdoor background and industry which I think is really good as well.
» What do you think of the University in general?
I really like the building and it's layout. The town is good too if you're not looking for a big city. I find you don't get distracted here, so I can get my work done. That's the reason I chose Buxton, because of the small town and no distractions.
» What are the highlights of your time here?
I think my highlight would be the practical side of the course - I think it's really good.
I also like Wednesday nights though as that's the student night here in Buxton. The Student Union put on themed nights out, they're always throwing themed parties for us!
» What do you think of Buxton town, nightlife, shopping and location?
It's a great town, if you're not looking for a city. The nightlife is nothing like a city, but Manchester, Sheffield and Derby are close by, and you can get to them by train if you don't drive. The nightlife in Buxton is definitely getting better though.
I like Buxton because you know where to go for things. The shops aren't perfect but you can get all your basic food and things from Morrisons, Aldi and Iceland which are near to the halls of residence.
» What would you say to someone who is thinking about coming to study a course at Buxton?
I'd recommend anyone coming to an open day and definitely take a look around the town. If you're not looking for big city life, it's perfect really.
