“If you want to go walking or climbing it's right on the doorstep.
”
Abby Hawkins is one of our BA Outdoor Activities Management students in her second year.
» Why did you choose this course?
I chose this course because I studied the BTEC at college and really enjoyed it. I think what I studied in college has helped me at university a lot. I wanted to come to university to have fun.
» Why did you choose to study Outdoor Activities Management at Buxton?
I chose Buxton because of the location. It was far enough from home but close enough to get back. The surroundings are nice and pretty, and if you want to go walking or climbing it's right on the doorstep.
» What have you enjoyed most about the course?
I've enjoyed the residential trips, in particular the one to the Lake District last year. We have one coming up in a couple of weeks to North Wales, where we'll go gorge walking, so I'm really looking forward to that.
» What do you think about the facilities and equipment?
I think the facilities are ok. There could be more facilities based on site, like climbing walls, which would make the course better, and more practical days would be good but overall it ok. We go out on river trips, to the River Wye to kayak in Matlock.
» How have you found the lecturers and the support they have given to you?
You can always go find a lecturer if you need help, and blackboard (the Universities learning resources platform) is really good for communication.
» What do you think of the University in general?
The University is a nice location and you can't get lost because you just walk around in a circle. I like the University's surroundings-especially for my course.
» What do you think of Buxton town and its location?
There are a limited number of shops in Buxton as it's a small town, but you can get your basics. The location is easy to get to though; it's only an hour away from Sheffield and Manchester's only 40 minutes on the train. It is easier if you drive though I must admit.
» What are the highlights of your time here?
General student life and meeting new people.
» What would you say to someone thinking about coming to study a course at Buxton?
Wear warm clothes and snow boots!
