Why choose this course?
- You will be studying in the heart of the Peak District - what better place to develop your outdoor leadership skills!
- We use a great range of climbing areas, including; The Roaches, Stanage Edge, Burbage Edge, Yarncliff, Castle Naze and Alderly Quarry.
- You will go canoeing and kayaking in Combs Reservoir , where we have a partnership with the Sailing Club.
- You will be testing your paddling skills on the River Derwent as well as experiencing the rapids and whitewater rafting in places like Afon Tryweryn and Afon Conwy in North Wales.
- You will have the opportunity to go on trekking trips to Morocco, as well as developing your winter skills in Scotland.
- You will gain real life experience in your second year work placement.
About the course
You will study this course at Buxton in the heart of the Peak District. What better place is there to take your activity skills and adventures to a new level. We use a range of great climbing areas such as the Roaches and Stanage Edge; with kayaking and canoeing at Combs Reservoir and the Derwent Valley.
The reputation of outdoor education in the UK has influenced countless countries in developing their own outdoor activity industries. We want you to be a part of this further development - leading the way in developing issues around leadership and education, risk management, environmental impacts, and further develop the outdoor education sector within the UK for future generations.
The Outdoor Activities programme works with a variety of organisations within the sector to provide you with up-to-date teaching and opportunities whilst you are studying.
This includes organisations such as:
- British Mountaineering Council
- British Association of International Mountain Leaders
- Mammut Technical Equipment Manufacturer.
Your career
Previous students on the outdoor recreation programme at the University of Derby have entered positions, including:
- Outdoor activity leadership
- Expedition team leadership

- Raft guiding
- Lecturing/teaching positions.
The programme also provides you with an opportunity for work placement in our department, as a team building assistant instructor for corporate clients.
