About this module

This module is for students who are interested in exploring quality both in their own area of practice and across the whole organisation.

It aims to enable you to critically explore issues about quality within health care organisations. This includes both clinical and corporate governance with an emphasis on relating what happens in your area of practice to the wider organisation. It will support you to make an informed contribution to the current debates about quality and apply this to a particular situation. This should enable you to take a more pro-active approach within your own area of work to benefit yourself, your patients/clients and the organisation you work for.

The module will explore the relevant literature in relation to current policy initiatives and real situations, both national and local.

The group sessions cover the key theoretical approaches and policy directives. These are explored in relation to both published information and examples from the student's areas of practice.  Students will explore and evaluate quality issues within their own organisation, this provides a practical opportunity for peer and tutor feedback. Key content includes theoretical approaches to organisational quality, patient safety, the quality assurance cycle, clinical and corporate governance, commissioning for quality, the impact of quality failures, critical incidents and root cause analysis, case study analysis.
