Kerry Wiggins
What made you decide to do this course?
I completed my NVQ4 in Advice and Guidance in 2005 and I knew the assessment of my qualification had been rigorous and I was fortunate to receive some good underpinning knowledge sessions on theory and models of guidance.
This motivated me to want to learn more and to fill in the gaps in my theoretical and academic understanding of the subject but I knew that I needed to achieve a higher qualification in order to remain competitive in the labour market. I needed to study in a way that fitted in with a full time job and Derby appeared to be an excellent and affordable choice.
How would you describe your online student experience?
The study materials were excellent and the suggested order of module choices eased me into the subject in a way that gave me early success and increased my confidence. Much of the reading was very journal based, which meant resources were readily available via Athens. By and large the study areas accorded closely with my work and were of immediate and current interest, which made them both absorbing and useful, giving me an insight into the influences of my practice.
What did you find particularly beneficial?
An in-depth understanding of the social and political context in which I worked. This made it easier to cope with the constant change and disruption within the service.
What would you say to anyone considering an online degree at Derby?
I would strongly recommend it. An online degree allows you to fit your learning around all your other commitments and does not require permission from your employer to take time off work to study. You can study in a way that is most beneficial to your circumstances. The method of assessment is more appropriate for those who are unable to demonstrate their ability and potential in exams. However you do need a high level of personal commitment to succeed.
