Cognitive Behavioural Studies & Skills (not a license for practice), Advanced University Diploma
Course code: UB9BA (required to complete application form)
There are only a handful of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) qualifications available, and few of them can be taken online. This is a convenient, 1 year introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy that fits around your busy working life.
It’s the first step towards becoming an accredited cognitive behavioural psychotherapist, or just a perfect entry level course to help you learn more about this fascinating area of therapy. This qualification alone will not give you a licence to practice but may help you to decide if this is a career you wish to pursue.
Whatever your role, it’s the ideal introduction to CBP
A diverse range of people take this course, which makes for more interesting class discussions and debates. You will usually have a nursing or social work background and will need a related qualification, but you might be an aspiring therapist or counsellor, or already have years of experience in such a role. If you want to work towards becoming an accredited cognitive behavioural therapist, this will count as one of the four years of training required.
An online course, but there’s plenty of opportunities to practice
You might be surprised to learn that CBT can be studied online. But in fact we use innovative methods to help you get that all important opportunity to practice and receive feedback. For instance you’ll be asked to conduct and video a ‘mock’ therapy session with a friend and our experienced tutors – themselves qualified counsellors and psychotherapists – can assess how well you did. So in many ways it’s a ‘safe’, less daunting environment in which to learn.
Studying online gives you the flexibility to study at the most convenient time and place for you. Course modules still operate within a fixed semester or term time, but you can choose to study during the day, in the evenings or at the weekend rather than having to attend fixed lectures.
You will need:
- a University Diploma in Counselling or an equivalent qualification
- the ability to work independently
- computer access
- to complete an online application form with suitable references.
You are also normally required to have one of the following English Language qualifications (or equivalent):
- GCE O-level English Language C
- GCSE English C
- IELTS 5.5
- TOEFL (paper-based) 550
- TOEFL (computer-based) 213.

Becoming an accredited CB psychotherapist
In order to become an accredited cognitive behavioural psychotherapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), you'll need to complete four years of training. This Advanced Diploma course is the first step and accounts for one year of that training.
To complete the final three years of training, you can undertake our MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy – many of our students have stayed on to do this and they find this helps them become highly skilled cognitive behavioural psychotherapists.
"This course provided me with a very good introduction to the world of cognitive behavioural psychotherapy, and it has helped me to reassess my career options and where I want to take my life."
John Aitken, who studied this course and has now progressed onto our MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It provided a sound introduction to the world of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy and confirmed my desire to become an accredited CB Therapist.”
Farishta Jalal, Graduated 2010/11
You will need to complete the core modules listed below. The order of the modules will depend upon your start date (i.e. whether you start in September or January).

Practitioners such as nurses, counsellor’s and psychotherapists need to be able to communicate with psychiatrists, other members of mental health teams and medical staff in primary care and other medical settings. In addition practitioners are often required to give opinions in a legal context. Furthermore the psychological literature uses diagnostic classification as the basis for empirical research.
It is therefore imperative that practitioners are able to make use of diagnostic classifications in order to communicate accurately and use the literature to inform practice. Practitioners will also regularly come into contact with clients who are taking or may require a joint medication and psychological psychotherapeutic approach. It is therefore important that a working knowledge of prescribed medications and psychopharmacology (the study of drug-induced changes in mood, sensation, thinking, and behaviour) is acquired.
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to critically analyse:
- the use of ICD 10 and DSM 4 (diagnotic classifications) in order to identify a range of psychological and emotional disorders
