Work Begins On New IT Data Centre

Kirtley Building

The new data centre will be based at the Kirtley Building on the University's Kedleston Road site.

Construction of a new data centre is underway at the University's Kedleston Road site to improve IT services.

The data centre will be located in the Kirtley Building (adjacent to B Block) at the far end from its Team Derby sports facilities, with a plant area to be developed between Kirtley and the car park. Work began during the Easter break and is due to be completed by the end of September.

This new data centre will replace the current five server rooms spread around the Kedleston Road site. When completed it will have protected power and resilient cooling, and will complement investments already made to the current service based at the Markeaton Street site.

These changes are being made to provide the core building blocks for greater capacity, reliability and availability for IT Services in the future.

Ken Barnes, Commercial Project Manager, said: "I am working with the suppliers to ensure disruption to staff and students during construction is kept to a minimum, hence the reason for starting work during Easter week.

"The work does include internal demolition and external excavation so I apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused but the noisy work should be complete within the first couple of weeks."

Staff experiencing excessive disturbance due to the data centre works can contact Ken direct on ext. 7998 or email: k.barnes@derby.ac.uk
