Around 120 current students studying BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Illustration, BA (Hons) Animation recently enjoyed a master class in Visual Communications at the Markeaton Street site. It was organised by the Alumni Relations team, Laura Ratcliffe and Charley Torr, and hosted by graduates from these degree courses.

The graduates had been invited back to talk about their careers since leaving Derby and to pass on top tips to current students on how their industries work.

They included:

Tim Jones BA (Hons) Graphic Design 2005

Art Director for global advertising agency McCann Erickson based in Birmingham. He has worked on advertising brands including; WKD, Harley Davidson, Avis Cars, Saab, Aston Martin, Lotus, Hardys Wine.

Tim's top tip for students: 'Due to the recession, clients are coming out of London to look for agencies. This means there are great opportunities in the region to pick up business from global brands and career prospects'.

Rebecca Morledge BA (Hons) Illustration 2007

Self employed illustrator with own studio based at University of Derby incubation space, Banks Mill. Takes commissions to hand draw and illustrate city and rural scenes which can be customised to include the people who have commissioned the art work.

Rebecca's top tip for students: 'It's important to develop a personal voice as an artist by surrounding and interacting with other creatives. Banks Mill has been perfect for this'.

Jemima Williams BA (Hons) Animation 2007

Production assistant for Astley Baker Davies a London based animation company. Their successes include the twice BAFTA award winning Peppa Pig brand. Jemima started as a runner for the company and has now worked up to current role where she overseas the whole merchandise range for Peppa Pig and is now working on developing theme park for the character.

Jemima's top tip for students: 'Keep networking; the animation industry is very sociable, and lots of jobs are gained through word of mouth referrals'.

Matt Mills BA (Hons) Graphic Design 2005

Designer at Visual Code an independent graphic design studio based in very rural Shropshire. Matt has also worked on global brands including contracts for Sky TV proving that businesses don't have to be based in a big city to be successful.

Matt's top tip for students: 'You'll need to work quickly in production especially working in a small team to make a cost effective campaign. Try and time yourself on your university projects to get into the habit early!'
