University's 8th Buxton to Derby Charity Bike Ride
14 June 2012
It will be a day of sweat and sore muscles tomorrow (Friday June 15) as the University of Derby hosts its 8th Buxton to Derby Bike Ride.
The annual fixture sees staff, students and others sponsored to cycle a 45 mile route from the University's Buxton Campus to its main Kedleston Road site in Derby, to raise thousands of pounds for good causes. For the more daring there is even a 70 mile challenge route.
Last year's event, during National Bike Week, raised more than £2,000 for the Derbyshire Air Ambulance's funds.
This year 52 cyclists are expected to start off from Buxton tomorrow morning, with the fastest due to be back in Derby by lunchtime. The route avoids main roads, using mainly National Cycle Routes and back roads, with marshals patrolling it to pick up cyclists encountering any difficulties.
The University provides free one-way transport from Derby up to the Buxton starting line for all cyclists and staff are given special leave to take part in the event. Money raised from the 2012 event will go to charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, which raises awareness of the risk of undiagnosed heart conditions in young people.
