A martial arts expert and University of Derby Buxton programme leader has been awarded his 5th dan by the World Martial Arts Council (WMAC).
The President of the WMAC, Alan Foster, visited the University of Derby Buxton recently to congratulate Charles Spring and to give him a certificate marking the achievement.
Charles has been practising and coaching martial arts including karate, kickboxing and Krav Maga for over 35 years. He brings this expertise to lecture on Joint Honours sport courses at the University's Buxton Campus.
He said: "To achieve the 5th dan I had to demonstrate a continuing development of scientific understanding and experience in karate.
"I carry out research into experiential learning and martial arts, and its application in the university sector, which further develops my knowledge. But I can also pass this on to the students, both at University and in my clubs.
"I'm really proud to have achieved this standard, and hope to continue practicing and teaching in martial arts for many years to come."
The University of Derby Buxton has developed strong links with the World Martial Arts Council (WMAC) through Charles and recently became a WMAC Centre of Excellence; meaning it can validate coaching awards, regulate teaching standards and develop courses for martial arts coaches that lead to academic qualifications.
