University Funding Is Music To Brass Band’s Ears
27 November 2007
A town band will be making music in a regional contest thanks to the help of notes - of the monetary kind - from the University of Derby’s Devonshire Campus in Buxton.
Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Band will use a generous donation of £1,500 from the University of Derby Buxton to support its endeavours in the coming 12 months, with the figure to be reviewed in future years.
The band will use some of the funding to renovate its band room on Willow Drive, in Chapel-en-le-Frith, as it is in a poor state of repair.
Funding will also be used to enable the band to attend the Midlands Regional Championship competition in March 2008, which will be held in Bedworth. It will be the first time the ban has entered the regional competition since it was re-formed in 2003.
Band Conductor Aidan Howgate said: "We are really pleased that the band will once again be able to enter the regional competition.
"In the past the band has had a great deal of success at this competition, rising to the second section in a previous contest."
Professor David Gray, Dean of the University of Derby’s Buxton faculty, said: "The University of Derby Buxton is a community university, and is very proud of its ongoing partnership with the communities of Buxton and the High Peak.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to support the Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Band during this period of growth and development.
"The band has a very similar mission to our own and that is to offer educational opportunities to the people of the High Peak, and to help people in identifying and reaching their untapped potential."
Following its reformation the band is once again a thriving concern. It has 22 players in the senior band, a junior band called SK23 with 21 members and several beginners looking to progress to SK23 in the near future.
The band is always willing to welcome new players to rehearsals, whether they have previous musical experience or not. Cornet players and a euphonium player are particularly required by the senior band at the moment.
Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Band also runs an initiative called the Cool2playbrass educational project, which promotes the playing of brass instruments among people of all ages.
Tuition is provided for new starters on an individual basis and in groups. For further information please contact Aidan on 01298 214459.
Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Band and the SK23 junior band will be performing a concert at Chapel-en-le-Frith Methodist Church on Saturday December 1 at 7pm.
Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for concessions, with free entry for children under six-years-old. They will be on sale on the door or in advance from Mica Hardware, Chapel-en-le-Frith.
