University Bids For NHS Therapy Contract
14 July 2011
The University of Derby has been successful in its expression of interest to support and provide training as part of the government's plans to improve access to psychological therapy for children and young people. It is now in the process of tendering for the contract .
The aim of this latest Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) initiative is to make evidence based psychological therapies more accessible for children and young people experiencing depression or anxiety.
The University hopes to be involved with the provision of the training for this service. On July 11 Paul Lumsden from the Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust welcomed Kevin Jarman, the Operations, Finance, Delivery and Health Leader of IAPT of the Department of Health to open a seminar on IAPT, held at the University's Enterprise Centre.
Delegates included commissioners, public health specialists, clinicians, service coordinators and representatives from Children and Adolescents Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
The University of Derby is unique because it is the only university in England to offer a fully accredited level two British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies 'Children and Adolescents' (BABCP) course.
The University's experts in these areas, such as Margot Levinson, who has led this course for three years, spoke during the seminar on the issues and challenges of the IAPT initative for children and adolescence.
The University intends to bid as a Phase 1 site to provide this training, due to the extensive and distinguished record it has as a provider for Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy, going back around 20 years. Its Masters degree in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy has been recognised by the BABCP since 2004, demonstrating how professional and high quality the course is.
The University should know by November 2011 if they have been successful in their bid.
