The Jubilee Beacon alight on the University's South Tower, with members of the Estates Team

The University of Derby had a starring role in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Monday 4 June when it hosted a Jubilee Beacon on its South Tower.

Around 100 people from the University community, including members of its Governing Council, honorary degree holders, staff, families and guests attended the lighting of the Beacon at 10.26pm precisely.

The University's South Tower was chosen as a location for a Beacon because of its prominent position on Derby's skyline. The four foot high flame could be seen burning brightly in the night sky from across the city, and joined up a network of 56 further beacons around Derbyshire and 4,000 in the UK and Commonwealth.

The Queen, lit the final Beacon at the concert in Buckingham Palace at 10.30pm.

Special thanks must go to the University's Estates Team for their role in the event.
