TV's George McGavin Delights Derby Audience With Travel Tales
14 September 2012
Over 200 people visited the University on September 8 2012 to hear from well-known zoologist, explorer and TV presenter George McGavin.
The family lecture, which was part of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust's (DWT) 50th anniversary celebrations, was sponsored by the University of Derby's Biological and Forensic Sciences departments. George's talk explored his lifelong interest in wildlife - insects in particular - his days in academia at the University of Oxford and as a visiting professor at the University of Derby, and also his most recent experiences in television, creating shows such as BBC's Lost Land of the Tiger, Expedition Borneo, Lost Land of The Volcano and The One Show.
He explained how he was using his TV expeditions to highlight the critical need to conserve the wild places and wildlife of the world, but talked about his frustration that the public are very focused on 'furry animals' but less interested in other forms of life such as insects and plants which are also highly endangered and vital to the planet.
George closed the event with a question and answer session and signed photographs for the audience.
