We're absolutely delighted to have won the first-ever Alumni Sports Award.  We're going to use the grant to buy some pop-up tackling dummies which will help eliminate injuries to our players during training sessions.

Team Derby's American Football Club, the Derby Braves, have been chosen as the worthy winners of the first ever Alumni Sport Award. The players were presented with the £1,000 grant by the University's Vice-Chancellor at the annual Team Derby Sports Awards dinner on April 17 at Derbyshire County Cricket Club.

The award win rounds off a fantastic year for the Braves, in which they secured third place in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league and took home Team Derby's Team of the Year trophy.

The Braves are the first team to receive the Alumni Sport Award after it was launched earlier this year.  To win, they had to pass a number of gruelling challenges including stating in words how the Alumni Sports Award would make a difference to them, and presenting to a board of judges.

Katie Chamberlin from the University's Alumni Relations Team said: "All of the teams who applied for the grant really impressed us with their dedication to their sport, and how they planned to use the money to increase participation and engage with the community.

"It was a really difficult decision, but the Brave's boundless enthusiasm for their sport, how much they had already achieved, and how they wanted to grow and improve exemplified what Team Derby is all about. "

Rob Urquart, Team President of the Derby Braves and second year Construction Management student at the University, said:  "We're absolutely delighted to have won the first-ever Alumni Sports Award.  We're going to use the grant to buy some pop-up tackling dummies which will help eliminate injuries to our players during training sessions.

"We're also looking forward to working with the Alumni Relations teams over the coming months on some exciting projects, and to raise awareness of the great work they do."
