Toast Of The Town
21 July 2010
Foundation Degree Culinary Arts and BA (Hons) Hospitality students at the University of Derby Buxton ended their first year by hosting a successful gala meal, and raised over £800 for Great Ormond Street in the process.
The 'Opulence at the Dome' evening was conceived and planned by 33 first year students, as part of the end of year assessment for their courses.
Guests
The students welcomed 64 guests to the event on May 6 in The Dome Fine Dining Restaurant, including the editor and staff of Pure Buxton magazine along with longstanding advertisers, senior University staff, local business owners and recent graduates. The guests were served a five course fine dining experience accompanied by live music.
Three groups devised and planned an evening as part of their final year project and then tendered for the work - competing against the other groups.
Work Experience
Leonard Cseh, Undergraduate Programme Leader in Hospitality and Culinary Arts at the University of Derby Buxton, said: "Students not only had to plan a menu, devise entertainment and budget for the event, but they also had to staff and run the whole evening.
"This project is an example of how students at the University are given the opportunity to apply what they learn in class in real world settings, and gain valuable work experience in the process."
Success
The evening was also the setting for Pure Buxton magazine's third anniversary celebrations, and featured in the magazine.
Steve Caddy, editor of Pure Buxton magazine said : "The Opulence team did a great job in looking after their guests and the food was excellent. We wanted to thank our long-term advertisers for their support and the students did us proud."
It was also a fundraising opportunity, and over £800 for chosen charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital was raised.
