Three In The Running For Tourism Awards
1 March 2011
The Buxton Faculty is eagerly anticipating the Visit Peak District Excel Tourism Awards as three of its students and staff have been shortlisted for the prestigious awards.
The Excel Awards celebrate the best aspects of tourism in the Peak District and Derbyshire every year, and recognise some of the most successful and committed people working in tourism in the area.
This year, third year BA (Hons) in Managing in the Service Sector and Travel & Tourism degree student, Fay Fallows, has been shortlisted in the Most Promising Student or Trainee category. Fay was nominated for the award by her lecturers for the work she has done to develop and deliver the Devonshire Dome Visitor Experience Programme - a programme of guided tours showcasing the Dome's unique history.
A dedicated member of the Dome Events team, Chrissy Edwards, has also been shortlisted in this category. Chrissy works as part of Buxton's Dome Events team to deliver some of the incredible events that take place in the Dome throughout the year, such as BBC Question Time and the Buxton Military Tattoo as well as corporate events, weddings and banquets.
And, a final year Buxton student has made it into the last three of the Young Chef of the Year category after wowing the judges in a sensational cook-off.
Savvas Savva who is originally from Cyprus, is mid-way through a top up year of a BA (Hons) in Professional Culinary Arts at Buxton. During the cook-off he competed against five other young local chefs, and impressed the independent judges with a seafood starter followed by a chicken main course.
All three shortlisted nominees have been invited to attend the glittering Excel Tourism Awards ceremony which takes place on 10 March at Chatsworth.
Dr Peter Dewhurst, Dean of the University of Derby Buxton said: "We're incredibly proud that these three members of the University community have been nominated and recognised by the Excel Awards. They have all worked incredibly hard to ensure that Buxton stays 'on the map' as a popular tourist destination.
"Their fellow students and staff across the University wish them all the best of luck."
