Third Successful Derby To Buxton Bike Ride
22 June 2007
To celebrate National Bike Week, University of Derby staff have today donned their Lycra and helmets to complete a 40-mile ride from the Kedleston Road site in Derby to its Devonshire Campus in the Peak District spa town of Buxton.
It’s the third successful year for this event. The University agreed special leave for those taking part. Around 40 members of staff from both sites left Kedleston Road at 9.30am.
The route avoided main roads, travelling through Etwall and using National Cycle Route 54 for the majority of the journey. This meant fewer hills - but there was a lot of rain to contend with. Transport for cyclists and bikes was provided from Buxton in the morning and returning from Buxton in the afternoon.
This year the riders are raising money for the Derby Stroke Unit, and the University of Derby branch of Unison pledged to donate £100 to the appeal. “Some of our members are riding tomorrow,” said Union Treasurer Ron Chelton, “so we thought it would be a nice idea to donate a single sum. We wish them every success!”
Last year, Nearly 50 members of staff cycled from Buxton to Kedleston Road, raising £1,100 for the Derby Hospitals Gamma Camera Appeal in the process!
“After riding to Buxton, riding to work will seem easy!” said Transport and Travel Manager James Brown. “In previous years several members of staff have made the decision to cycle to work more often.”
Derby 7Cs Project Officer Debbie Wargate will be one of the riders. At Buxton she will join Energy Officer Anne Downes for a Derby 7Cs Climate Change Road Show.
