The University of Derby is pleased that it has risen nine places in the Sunday Times University Guide’s ranking of UK universities – from 116th place in the 2007 version of the annual guide to 107th in the new edition, published on Sunday (21 September).

We are pleased to see the guide also recording a 72.2% overall student satisfaction rating.

The University also understands that in the 2008 guide’s breakdown of student satisfaction by subject area, Derby’s Law students are ranked the second most ‘satisfied’ in the UK, after Sunderland University’s students.

This supports the separate Teaching Quality Information 2007 National Student Survey, which ranked Law at Derby as top for student satisfaction.

The 2008 Sunday Times University Guide also records improvements in the percentage of graduates employed, particularly those entering graduate level jobs.

Earlier this month (September), the results of the 2008 National Student Survey showed that 76% of Derby students questioned agreed with the statement,“Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of my course”, compared with 73% in the 2007 NSS survey.

In the NSS survey, Derby also saw significant improvements in student satisfaction in courses such as Education, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Engineering and Technology, and Biological Sciences.

Commenting on the Sunday Times University Guide 2008, Professor John Coyne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, today, said: “I am pleased at the nine place rise in our national rankings, from 116th last year to 107th this year.

“It is also pleasing to reflect that we are likely to have our largest and best qualified ever student population coming to the University of Derby this September.

“So, the measured and steady growth we have enjoyed in recent years has continued.

"Our investment in estates and facilities here at Derby remains on track and I’m confident that the money we are spending will be reflected in future improved ranking, both nationally and regionally.”
