Tackling A Tough Job Market
24 November 2011
With recent national figures showing unemployment among the under-25s at a 20-year high, the University is working hard to give its students and graduates the best chance of finding a job.
Office for National Statistics' figures last month (November) revealed that unemployment among 16 to 24-year-olds topped one million, in the most recent quarter (the three months up to September).
Responding to this, and with Christmas on the horizon, the University's Student Employment Agency (SEA) is continuing to push for full and part time employment opportunities for our students, both internally and externally.
It is part of the National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES), which is highlighting the importance of the employability agenda.
The University office, based just off the Atrium at the Kedleston Road site, provides valuable paid work experience for students to both enhance their career CV and earn extra cash.
It has more than 3,000 students on its register, with a range of skills suitable for a multitude of jobs. Past work has included everything from role playing as hospital patients, to furniture removal, to market research, to catering.
Emma Smith, SEA Co-ordinator said "We are committed to delivering a quality service and providing paid opportunities for our students."
The SEA works closely with the University's Career Development Centre (CDC), which has also responded well to a tougher job market with an intensive series of free jobs skills sessions for students and recent graduates
