The University of Derby is celebrating after scooping a prestigious national award.

It won the Outstanding Registry Team award at THE magazine's Leadership and Management Awards 2011 in London. Derby beat off competition from the University of Hertfordshire, University of Plymouth, St Mary's University College, University for the Creative Arts and the University of Wolverhampton.

June Hughes, Director of Student Support and Information Services and Academic Registrar at Derby, said: "We are delighted to be recognised - it is a great team achievement."

Derby's submission was based around its attendance monitoring service. The application detailed: ' Putting the student at the heart of what we do was the driving force for the introduction of an attendance monitoring service that supports students in recognising the importance of engaging effectively with their learning experience, leading to improved retention and student satisfaction.'

'Programme Advisory Service, in Derby's Registry, led the development of innovative and cost effective student attendance monitoring through successful cross-institutional partnership with academics and Information Technology Services.  Our aim is tore-engage the student with the module and engage with the University.  The evidence demonstrates the correlation between attendance and progression and achievement.'

Derby was also shortlisted in the Outstanding Marketing and Communications Team category at the awards last night with around 12 other universities. The title went to the University of Nottingham.

THE magazine received 200 entries from 95 different institutions for the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2011.

The shortlisted entrants competed in 16 categories ranging from Top Library Team and Best in Marketing and Communications to the Outstanding Student Services Team and those who have delivered the best departmental administration. Other categories covered Procurement, Research Management, University Finance and Human Resources.

Ann Mroz, editor of THE, said: "Our annual awards always serve as a reminder of the extraordinary quality and dedication of those working in our universities and colleges.

"This year is no exception. Our sector, like every other, has already gone through some tough times and is facing more turbulence as the new funding regime beds in. But a glance at the shortlist for our Leadership and Management Awards is enough to instil confidence that we have the right people in place to continue to prosper and deliver the world-class higher education for which the country is rightly renowned."

The awards took place at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London, on June 16.
