Students' Union's Celebrated For Green Practices
5 April 2013
The University of Derby Students' Union (UDSU) has received a Silver Green Impact Award from the NUS for its commitment to improving environmental practice.
Presented to the UDSU team at the NUS Services Convention closing gala dinner, the Silver award demonstrates Derby's dedication to sustainability.
Over a hundred participating students' unions competed against one another in an effort to be recognised as the greenest during the annual awards ceremony - making the accolade of Silver a true distinction.
James Beckett, Students' Union President from University of Derby Students' Union said: "It is a tremendous honour to receive this award and to be recognised for the progressive work that we do to improve both our environmental practices and our commitment to become a more sustainable organisation.
"Last year we received a Bronze award so it was fantastic to be awarded Silver this time round. It is through the efforts of our dedicated, passionate and hardworking staff and students that have helped us achieve this award.
"We will continue on our journey to become a greener Students' Union by working towards a Gold award over the next year."
Dannie Grufferty, NUS Vice President of Society and Citizenship said:
"It's so important to congratulate students' unions for their dedication to improving environmental practice - and it's wonderful to see the standards being raised each year, thanks to the innovation and commitment displayed by countless staff and students."
Green Impact Students' Unions is a behavioural change programme delivered by NUS, helping students' unions to improve environmental practice. Providing each students' union with a bespoke workbook of criteria for staff to work through, the programme helps to improve practice in areas such as energy, procurement, biodiversity and waste.
