Students' Sports Relief Success
26 March 2012
Students and staff from across the Buxton Faculty volunteered their time and expertise - and even put their running shoes on - to help raise money for BBC Sport Relief last week.
Fourteen University of Derby Buxton Events Management degree students and Buxton College Sports students marshalled the Sport Relief Mile event in Glossop on March 25; making sure the event ran smoothly, and that all 250 runners received a medal and a goodie bag on the finish line.
An organiser of the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile, Emma Champion, said: "It was a pleasure to work alongside the students from the College and University. They were professional and helpful to all other event staff and participants, and were instrumental in the smooth running of the event.
"The Glossop Sport Relief Mile was the first event on the local Olympic Legacy Calendar, which will celebrate sport in the High Peak during 2012, and we're looking forward to working with the students on future events."
Ashley Mays, a student on Buxton College's BTEC in Sport course, said: "The sport relief event was great fun and it was fantastic to play a part in a country wide fundraising initiative."
Two Buxton College staff got their trainers on to join in another national Sport Relief event. They were two of the 1,000 people who ran from the Isle of Mull to London as part of the BBC TV's The One Show '1,000 mile relay'.
Frances Sussex, Deputy Head of Buxton College, and Steve Morris, a Trainer/ Assessor on the Motor Vehicle programme, both ran a mile on Thursday March 22. Steve ran in Pikehall, and Frances ran her mile up Buxton's Cemetery Hill, towards Sterndale Moor.
Frances said: "Despite getting lost in the Goyt Valley, and having to run 1.6 miles uphill in the end, I loved it. My target set by The One Show was £50 and through staff and students' support I have raised £268. I must thank everyone for their donations."
A further mile-run was organised at the student's Campus, where sporty students and staff got into the competitive spirit to run around the outside of the Devonshire Dome three times to complete one mile.
