Hospitality and Culinary Arts students at the University of Derby Buxton took the opportunity to impress potential employers when they hosted and cooked a meal at a recent Employer Day.

Representatives from local and national businesses including George's Tradition, Just B in Ashbourne; the Lakeside Hotel, Cumbria; Taste Tideswell and even Skibo Castle in the Highlands of Scotland came to the Employer Day, which was organised by Programme Leader Leonard Cseh and Work Placement Officer, Ben Offord.

After attending presentations from the representatives, first year Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts degree students then prepared, cooked and presented an à la carte menu for them in The Dome Fine Dining Restaurant. The menu included delights such as crab and leek tartlet with brown shrimp and cucumber dressing, grilled supreme of Chatsworth chicken, and a white chocolate nougat glace with a compote of forest fruits for dessert.

Leonard Cseh, Programme Leader for Hospitality and Culinary Arts at the University of Derby Buxton said: "We wanted students to meet and talk to employers to get an understanding of the skills and attributes that the industry needs. The day went incredibly well and the students really impressed representatives from some top potential employers. In fact, many students secured placement positions or employer mentoring."

Chairman of Just B, Indy Sandhu, whose flagship restaurant is in Ashbourne, said: "We had a lovely evening and thought that the students did themselves proud. We look forward to furthering our relationship with the University and employing its students in years to come."

Marilyn Hodsdon, HR Manager, at the Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle, said: "This excellent initiative provided a unique opportunity to bring employers and students together. I have no doubt that a mutually beneficial relationship has now been firmly established between Skibo and the University as a consequence."
