Students Mark International Nurses Day With City Procession
17 May 2013
Nursing students and academics from the University of Derby will join Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust nurses, midwives and caregivers in a procession through Derby on Saturday (May 18), to mark International Nurses Day and celebrate the life of Florence Nightingale.
The group of nurses, midwives and carers will begin the procession at 10.30am at St Peter's Church in Derby city centre, where the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary's stained glass window depicting Florence Nightingale is now situated. From here they will process to Derby Cathedral for a service starting at 11.am.
Dr Paula Crick, Acting Head of the University of Derby's School of Health, said: "Our staff and students are delighted to be taking part in Derby's celebration of nursing and the life and work of Florence Nightingale.
"We work closely with Derby Hospitals to provide our Nursing degree students with placements across its wards and community sites. As a significant number of our graduates go on to find employment with the Trust, many of those we will be walking with on the day will be graduates from our University."
The celebration on May 18 has been organised by Derby Cathedral and Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which operates the Royal Derby Hospital, London Road Community Hospital and community services.
Nurses, students and other staff from organisations including Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and the University of Nottingham are also taking part in the celebrations.
The service, beginning at Derby Cathedral at 11am, is free and open to the public. Anyone wishing to attend must be seated by 10.45am to allow for the procession to enter the Cathedral.
University nursing students and academics also joined nurses, midwives and caregivers from across Derbyshire at the Royal Derby Hospital on May 17 for its Commitment to Compassionate Care Conference. University Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing, Martin Brock, was among a team who talked on the University's values-based recruitment process.
