Students Help To Deliver Triple Event Success At The Dome
21 March 2013
University of Derby Buxton staff and students served up 'courses' for more than 1,600 would-be students, hardworking Chatsworth staff and a wedding party at Buxton's historic Dome, in one of its busiest weekends to date.
At the weekend (March 16-17) the University's Grade II* listed building played host to 134 prospective students at a University Open Day during Saturday daytime, a three course banquet for the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire alongside 850 employees of the Chatsworth estate in the evening and a wedding attended by 700 guests on Sunday.
The three events were expertly managed by UDB staff, and up to 75 Events Management, Hospitality and Culinary Arts students. University of Derby Buxton and Buxton College students regularly deliver events at the Dome, gaining real world experience and earning as they learn.
Some of the staff and students who worked on the Chatsworth banquet event even had the energy to go straight from their work at the Dome, to the airport on a Culinary Arts residential field trip to Florence, Italy.
Dr Peter Dewhurst, Strategic Director at the University of Derby Buxton, said: "Last weekend's events demonstrate the true value of the University of Derby Buxton's approach to higher education, with students benefiting from 'real world learning' experiences.
"These significantly enhance their employability skills, putting them at the cutting edge of current UK university provision in the areas of hospitality, culinary arts and events management."
