Students Enjoy Morocco Learning Experience
27 May 2011
Students from the Buxton Faculty's Spa Management and Tourism degree programmes have returned from an educational visit to Marrakesh, Morocco.
From 8 to 12 May, six students from the Travel and Tourism Management BA (Hons) degree, along with lecturer Dr Iride Azara took in visits to some of the city's most iconic tourism spots as part of their Destination Studies module; investigating how a country such as Morocco develops both adventure and cultural tourism.
Visits included the Mellah (Jewish quarters and souks), the Kasbah, Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, the Menara Gardens, the popular coastal town of Essaouira with a stop at a women's co-operative on route. The variety of experiences provided students with an opportunity to see first-hand the popularity of different aspects of the city and the cultural experiences it offers tourists.
The Morocco trip was also an excellent opportunity for Buxton's International Spa Management BSc (Hons) students to experience how spas in different countries and cultures operate.
The seven students, along with their Programme Leader Isobel Stockdale, visited Kenzi Club Oasis and La Maison Arabe Spa, where they experienced the treatments and products on offer.
A student commented: "The Moroccan spas had different treatments and products on offer, and clients had different expectations of the spa experience, which was good to know as I plan on working abroad in the future."
