During June a group of intrepid Outdoor, Adventure and Countryside Management students from the University of Derby Buxton conquered the highest peak in North Africa's Atlas Mountains, Mount Toubkal in Morocco.

Eighteen first, second and final year undergraduate students climbed the 4,167 metre summit during the expedition; which proved to be a real highpoint in the University experience for many of the students.

Nicola Taylor, programme leader on the Foundation Degree in Outdoor Activities said: "Mount Toubkal is situated in the Atlas Mountains with a number of spectacular passes and stunning campsites. Even in June a significant amount of snow still clung to the sides of the mountain, which made the ascent even more challenging.  Crossing the snow fields proved to be a fantastic achievement for many students.

"In the true spirit of adventure the team tackled unexpected challenges and overcame various anxieties and fears. Many individuals expressed how their initial apprehensions had been overcome with persistence and determination.  But the supportive atmosphere and team camaraderie meant that all 18 students reached the summit on the morning of June 17 2011."

Expedition organiser Mike Gray praised the students on their personal development during the week in both their practical skills and personal confidence.

After the final grueling day in the Atlas Mountains, students enjoyed a break at the coastal town of Essaouira.  In contrast to the mountain experience, Essaouira offered the chance to engage with the local hustle and bustle and the obligatory haggle for a bargain.

Nicola continued "The Outdoor, Adventure and Countryside management students enjoyed an incredible finale to their academic year.

"The Morocco expedition is just one of the many residential experiences that form part of degree programmes at the University of Derby Buxton. All of these contribute to a truly balanced and holistic approach to University life."
