Student Wellbeing Focus Of Event
8 March 2011
A 'Fairtrade' pancake race around the Buxton Dome was a highlight of this week's student wellbeing event at the University of Derby Buxton.
The Mayor of High Peak, Councillor Graham Oakley, started the race, which saw a team of students and staff from the University go up against staff from Buxton's Fairtrade stockists supermarkets Morrisons and the Co-op in a race around the balcony of the Buxton Dome. The teams flipped pancakes made by chef-lecturer Robert Stordy and a team of Culinary Arts students to one another as they raced.
Representatives from the Derbyshire Sexual Health Promotion Service, Buxton Volunteer Centre, Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living (DCIL), and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue were also on hand to speak to students from the University and Buxton College. They discussed equality and diversity issues and student wellbeing over the two-day event.
Buxton College Sport BTEC student Aisha Hammond, 17, said: "It's been really interesting. I've spoken to people on the stands, signed a petition for Amnesty International and got some advice about my CV and volunteering from Connexions. I always feel well looked after here as they put on events like this quite often."
There was also entertainment from AAshiyana Arts who performed a traditional Indian dance and the Dome rang out with the sound of the Caribbean Regals Steel Band.
Brian Lutchmiah, Team Leader at the Student Wellbeing Service, said: "We wanted to host an event that would engage and assist our students in thinking and discussing a range of issues that affect them; such as sexuality, health, employment and wellbeing
"We're delighted that the event has been such a success and that so many of our students have joined in."
