28 October 2010
Katharina Sickora
It's nice to be remembered and asked back to talk to the students.
”A successful international graduate of the University of Derby Buxton returned recently to share the secrets of her success in the spa and tourism industry.
After graduating with a Masters degree in Tourism Management in 2008, Katharina Sickora went on to secure a place on an 18 month management scheme at the prestigious Aqua Dome spa resort in Tyrol, Austria. She now works for the Salzburg State Board of Tourism.
She returned to the University of Derby Buxton to share her career journey with over 120 current Travel and Tourism and Spa Management students.
Isobel Stockdale, Programme Leader for Hair, Beauty and Spa said: "We do all we can to prepare our students for the world of work, and so asking successful graduates like Katharina to come back and share their experiences is beneficial for our students. The students have commented how useful and inspirational her presentation was."
Katharina Sickora, originally from Germany, did the first two years at the Salzburg/Klessheim Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, which is one of the University of Derby Buxton's partner institutions, before completing her BA in Travel and Tourism in Buxton.
Katharina said: "I had such a good time as a student in Buxton. It's nice to be remembered and asked back to talk to the students. It's a real honour."
"There is a very personal feeling at this University; the tutorials are small so you are given the attention you need. The lecturers encouraged and supported me allowing me to achieve highly."
Peter Wiltshier, University Travel and Tourism Programme Leader, commented: "The Tourism team in Buxton are very proud of Katharina. She was always a star student and we hope many more of our students go on to share similar successes."
Katharina Sickora said: "The modules that I studied during my BA and MA courses applied to the real world of work and certainly helped me with my job, as I brought a good knowledge base of how marketing campaigns operated with me from the course."
