Serious Talent At University Computer Games Showcase
5 July 2012
Mad scientists' labs, alien warriors and a rocket powered milk float are among the imaginative scenes to feature in a free public show this week by University of Derby computer games students.
The Games@Derby Showcase will be held in the state of the art Computer Labs (Rooms B212 and B213), in B Block,at the University's Kedleston Road site in Derby, from 11am to 7pm on Friday (July 6).
Games industry professionals, prospective students and the public will see the prototype games and images created by around 15 second and final year students from the University's BA (Hons) Computer Games Modelling and Animation (CGMA), and BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming, degree courses.
There will also be demonstrations on how the highly technical work is put together. Members of IndieSkies Ltd - a games studio established and run by current students - will be present to talk about their experiences of working in the industry.
A 'showreel' of what to expect can be seen on the Games@Derby Showcase website - at www.derby.ac.uk/games-showcase - where visitors can also book a place to attend the free exhibition.
Among the works on display will be:
- scenes of alien environments and hi-tech labs (by student Chris Edwards)
- a rocket propelled milk float flying (by Lewis Wilde)
- a sunny Caribbean island (created by CGMA student artist Marco Maria Rossi).
The works will be screened in the University's industry standard Computer Labs. Students on the Computer Games courses work closely with industry professionals and are often given a chance to see prototype games they are working on, long before they go on sale.
David Wilson, University Programme Leader for Computer Games Modelling and Animation, said: "This showcase will be a great opportunity for our students and graduates to network with potential employers but also for prospective students, interested in either computer games programming or modelling, to see the great facilities we have here."
The Games@Derby Showcase is free and open to the public but visitors are asked to book ahead through the event website at www.derby.ac.uk/games-showcase
