Putting Women First For Business

29 March 2011

Activities at the recent Ladies Only business networking event.

Women in the East Midlands wanting to follow in the footsteps of The Apprentice's business guru Karren Brady were invited to the first Ladies Only business networking event. Held in the Atrium at the Kedleston Road site on Wednesday 23 March the event was organised by the Alumni Relations Team.

According to the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, out of 3,240 companies across the region, only a third (978) had the key contact as a woman. The Ladies Only event provided an opportunity for businesswomen in Derbyshire to network with other like-minded women and make new contacts. All exhibitors and practitioners were University of Derby graduates.

The event attracted over 100 ladies attendees, was hosted by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Liz Barnes and included:-

  • a prize draw to support the Breast Cancer Campaign: 'Join the fight for women's survival' which raised £106. Prizes include tickets for a production at Derby Theatre and a weekend break in Derby's brand new hotel, Hampton by Hilton
  • a business card draw for a spa break for two at the Devonshire Campus in Buxton.

Professor Barnes said: "This is the first of many events we hope to hold at the University, which will engage with local businesswomen, giving them the chance to meet other business people in the area and to share their skills and knowledge. I'm delighted to be hosting the event."

The exhibitors included:

  • Rachel Carter, who exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show in 2010
  • Jen Miles, photographer for a University published prospectus
  • Emma Atkinson, stylist and owner of retail business on Friar Gate, Derby
  • Hayley Powell, Forever Forged blacksmith artist
  • Kirstie Adamson, owner of Trash Revamp creates gifts from recycled materials.

Laura Ratcliffe, Alumni Relations Officer said: "This was a great opportunity to showcase how proud we are of our graduates, plus the graduates had the opportunity to network and establish new business contacts."
