Prospectus Is Picture Perfect For Jen
24 February 2010
For the first time the University of Derby has used one of its Photography graduates to help to create its new style undergraduate prospectus - the University's flagship marketing publication.
Little did Jen Miles, 28, think that six years after looking at the University's annual prospectus to find her own course she would be contributing to the 2011 version.
Jen, a freelance photographer based in Derby, has her own business called Gravity Rides which specialises in photographs of food, products and events. She was asked to contribute to the new look University prospectus because her work is stylish, unique, dynamic, modern and fun; which reflected the needs of the re-design.
Jen, who graduated from the University's BA (Hons) Commercial Photography degree course in 2008, said: "When I heard I'd been chosen to get involved with the new style prospectus I was extremely pleased and excited to be able to take on this challenge.
"Having grown up around Derby and attended the University myself it was a fantastic opportunity to get involved and really help show just what there is on offer."
The University likes to speak to its prospective students in a personalised and friendly way, and the new prospectus does just that. Now students can order their's online, picking the three subjects they're interested in, and three days later a personalised copy drops through their letterbox.
It gives people course information that's relevant to them and a feel for what the University of Derby is like to study at. This dynamic approach helps to build a strong relationship from day one with the prospective student.
It is also much more environmentally friendly to print course information on demand rather than in bulk. It is estimated that it will halve the amount of paper previously used by the University for the prospectus. This will help support the University's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
Lucy Temple - the University Web and Publications Manager who coordinated this innovative new approach - said: "We wanted to develop a prospectus for prospective students which had a 'wow' factor when it dropped through their letterbox; whilst also supporting our graduates, like Jen, with their career.
"Rather than just talk about how great our graduates are we wanted to show it and put our money where our mouth is by employing Jen for this project."
