I’d never been to a spa before but I’d certainly like to start going more now.

Appearing in new pole dancing female comedy drama The Naked Truth is leaving its actresses with more than a few bruises.

So when the cast of Lisa Riley (star of Emmerdale and Fat Friends), Samantha Seager and Jayne Tunnicliffe (both formerly of Coronation Street), Julie Buckfield (Hollyoaks), Gemma Wardle (Life On Mars), Lucy Rusedski (TV sports presenter) and Georgina North opened the play’s UK Spring tour at Buxton Opera House, the Devonshire Spa based at the University of Derby Buxton decided to give some of them a treat. (Lisa was unfortunately not able to take part).

The play’s setting of a pole dancing class and the women who attend it, and what they learn about themselves and each other through it, has been written by Dave Simpson, author of hit stage comedy Girls Night Out. It is directed by Stephen Leatherland.

Its cast were treated to sauna, steam room, facials and massage treatments at the Devonshire Spa, based at the University of Derby’s Devonshire Campus in Buxton, north Derbyshire.

The spa delivers hairdressing, beauty and spa degree programmes for students who work alongside qualified stylists and therapists, offering treatments to the public at discount prices. It was recently a finalist in Professional Beauty magazine’s 2008 annual awards.

Lucy Rusedski plays ex-pole dancer and class instructor ‘Gabby’ in the drama.

She said: “Our bodies do get bruised and battered from the pole dancing we do on stage, it’s really exhausting. That’s why it’s so nice for us to have been able to come to the spa.”

“I went for a facial, as our faces get caked in make-up for the show.”

Jayne Tunnicliffe plays ‘Sarah’, an older woman recovering from cancer. She added: “I went for the spa’s body massage as I have to fall twice during the play and I have hurt my back.

“I’d never been to a spa before but I’d certainly like to start going more now.”

Amanda Garrington - Operations Co-ordinator at The Devonshire Spa, at the University of Derby Buxton - said it had been a pleasure to have the celebrity cast as guests there for the day.

“Performing this kind of physical play night after night must really take a toll on the actresses’ bodies and we were happy to provide them with a bit of pampering,” she added.

The UK Spring tour of The Naked Truth opened at the Buxton Opera House, from March 24-29, and will run through until July 5 at the New Theatre, in Hull.
