Events Management professionals in the region can now study towards a new London 2012 Olympic 'Inspire Mark' approved qualification at the University of Derby.
The accolade means that Derby becomes the first University in the East Midlands to receive the Inspire Mark for one of their Events Management courses.
The BS8901 Events Management standard is aimed at people who work in venues, as festival organisers and events managers. Delegates will discover how to integrate economic, social and environmental responsibilities seamlessly into mainstream business and project management for the event industry.
The Inspire Mark - the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme - recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games and is a valuable asset for any organisation looking to prepare itself for the Olympics and Paralympics. It's awarded by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) Ltd.
The University's new events course will be available from March 2010 and has been developed by University of Derby Corporate - the University's business arm which dedicates itself to working with employers, by focusing on businesses' skills and training needs.
Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: "This new course is encouraging Events Management professionals in the region to fulfil their potential. I am proud that with the help of partners such as the University of Derby we are delivering on our vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to boost participation."
Conor Moss, Workforce Development Fellow, University of Derby Corporate said: "The industry is facing many changes including the new BS8901 Events Sustainability model. This course seeks to introduce and embed a sustainable management system into an organisation.
"The course has been recognised by the Inspire Mark, due to the relevance to the industry and because the content replicates the Olympics ethos of sustainability.
"Between now and the start of the London 2012 there will be many tendering opportunities for the events industry and organisations that are BS8901 compliant will have demonstrated a commitment to economic, social and environmental responsibility."
Events professionals interested in finding out more about the course are invited to a free half day seminar. The seminars will run on:
- February 12, 2010, at the Buxton Campus
- February 17, 2010, in Derby
- March 4, 2010, in Derby.
University of Derby Corporate is pleased to be offering this free half day seminar in association with Leap Ahead the Lifelong Learning Network (LLN) for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
