New Advisor Dedicated to Buxton Students
4 October 2010
Some of the University's international students get to know one another
As well as a new intake of students, the Buxton Campus also has a new International Student Advisor.
Mikaela Balder started the new role in September and will be working closely with colleagues in the International Student Centre to ensure that our international students have a good experience during their studies at Buxton.
Buxton's cohort of around 50 international and EU students arrived on 14 September, and were given a warm reception during a dedicated welcome week. Mikaela accompanied them on tours of the campus and Buxton town centre, organised a bowling trip and breakfast in the Fine Dining restaurant, and encouraged them to join international students from across the University of Derby on day trips to London and to Derbyshire's Chatsworth Estate.
But her work does not end there, and she will be working hard throughout the year to ensure that the students, who come from countries including Bulgaria, Korea and Taiwan, receive support and help as they get to grips with university life, and life in the UK.
Mikaela said: "It has been fantastic to meet the international students that have arrived so far, and I'm looking forward to working with them to ensure they have a good experience and feel part of the campus and wider Buxton community.
"The wide variety of cultures makes me learn something new every day and I hope that we will attract more overseas students for our Master courses starting in January."
Mikaela Balder, originally from Sweden, came to England in 2007 to study a BA (Hons) Events Management at the University of Derby Buxton. She successfully completed her degree this summer (2010). During her time as a student, she was given the Events Management Award for 'Outstanding Contribution to the University 2010' for her work with the international students.
