Running a real event has been a great opportunity. I've learned how important good communication skills are when liaising with speakers and delegates and keeping everything running smoothly

University of Derby Buxton students got the opportunity to test their event management skills on their own turf recently, when they organised and hosted the National Student Events Conference at their Buxton Campus.

A team of Events Management BA (Hons) students successfully organised and ran the two-day Conference on February 17-18. More than 200 student-delegates from nearby colleges and universities including the University of Birmingham and Manchester College attended the conference, where they heard from highly respected speakers from the events industry.

Speakers included the Director of Capita Symonds and President of the National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA) Richard Limb, Katie Price's wedding planner Chris Fitchew from Beau Production, Ralph Broadbent from the Peak District's Y Not Festival and Charlie Mussett from Nova International Ltd.

Matt Bromley, Assistant Subject Manager at the University, said: "Organising and hosting the National Student Events Conference gives our students a valuable opportunity to put their skills to the test and experience the real, often unanticipated challenges that can come up during an event."

Jay Sodhi, 22, who is in the second year of an Events Management BA (Hons) said: "Running a real event has been a great opportunity. I've learned how important good communication skills are when liaising with speakers and delegates and keeping everything running smoothly."

Buxton students were also able to attend the Conference sessions. Victoria Moore, Facilitator for Events Management and Public Relations at the University said: "The conference is also a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with the industry they will be entering, gaining valuable insight into the workings of events across the globe.

"We are very grateful to the speakers for sharing their experience with the students, and would like to thank them for being part of this year's Conference."
